Every Oldie reader will be well familiar with the portrayal of PC George Dixon by Jack Warner. But behind this well-known figure there was a real man. A Radical Member of Parliament, to be precise. Born in 1820 he became one of Birmingham's representatives alongside John Bright and Joe Chamberlain, campaigning for compulsory and free elementary education. Having founded the National Education League, the landmark 1870 Act followed. Dixon used his own money to establish a ground-breaking Seventh Grade Technical School, attended by the film director Sir Michael Balcon in Edwardian times. Much later, Sir Michael named his hero in the film 'The Blue Lamp' after the school's founder; the TV series 'Dixon of Dock Green' then followed.
